Wave energy
Waves are caused by wind blowing over water, and winds are generated by the sun heating the earth. The World Energy Council estimates that the energy that can be harvested from the worlds oceans is equal to twice the amount of electricity that the world produces now.The UK has by far the highest potential in the European Union for converting wave energy into electricity.
The amount of energy in waves around the UK is more than the energy currently used to meet peoples demand for electricity.Scotland has half a century of experience in renewable energy from hydro electricity schemes, and 30 years experience in the oil and gas industry. Wave energy technology is very young compared to generating electricity from wind turbines. Wavegen is at the leading edge of developing technologies to generate electricity using wave energy.
In Scotland, around 12% of electricity comes from renewable sources.
